In 20th century scholarship there is a strong tendency to read Aquinas’s theology along neo-Platonic lines, i.e., as instantiating the model of an ascent of the human soul from the insignificant world of the finite and perishable objects of perception towards the real, eternal ‘Being’ that we call God.
