The French-Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas (1905-1995) develops his philosophy as “une défense de la subjectivité.” The inhumanity of the Shoah calls for a non-totalitarian concept of subjectivity. Consciousness is carried by various experiences (“sensations”) such as enjoyment, perceptions, loneliness, thought and work, but also physical suffering. Consciousness is understood in the Kantian way as “Ich denke” or synthetic activity. Consciousness knows, understands and integrates the sensory world that thus appears as an ordered whole. Enjoyment is “le moment harmonieux d'une expérience.” It makes the world habitable. The physical pain, however, means a double break with the sensitive harmony.
