Being labelled as a 'child' has important consequences on how others perceive and treat you. Clarifying what is meant when we talk about 'childhood,' and how this reflects on the way children are treated in practice, is a fundamental part of social justice. The standard practice in philosophy, law and every-day life is to conceptualise children as fundamentally different from adults. This assumption of difference leads to a system of justice in which children are treated in a particular way: children are provided with certain protections not guaranteed to the rest of the human community, and they have restricted their freedom to exercise certain fundamental rights, which are guaranteed to all others.
