Athanasius of Alexandria is a figure to be reckoned with in the fourth-century Trinitarian debate, especially with regard to his defence of the theology of Nicaea. This project critically examines how he manifests his ardent support for the Nicene faith in one of his writings, De Decretis Nicaenae Synodi. Our aim is to show, through the analysis of this writing, what Athanasius’s views are as regards the Nicene definition of the Faith, especially as regards the relationship between the three divine persons. We will focus on showing the relevance of Athanasius’ opinions in the De Decretis to the Trinitarian theology of his time and how his unique contribution has shaped the debate.
