Fifty years ago, the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) was held in Rome. Its impact on church architecture in Belgium found its most most radical expression in the work of Marc Dessauvage (1931-84). His church buildings were made of brick, concrete and glass, and had no bell or crucifixes on the outside. In the post-conciliar spirit, the church was no longer a temple for an abstract deity, but a home for the community of the faithful. Fifty years later, the context is radically different.
