Re: Dessauvage. Moderne kerken herbekeken [Re: Dessauvage. Modern Churches Revisited]

Fifty years ago, the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) was held in Rome. Its impact on church architecture in Belgium found its most most radical expression in the work of Marc Dessauvage (1931-84). His church buildings were made of brick, concrete and glass, and had no bell or crucifixes on the outside. In the post-conciliar spirit, the church was no longer a temple for an abstract deity, but a home for the community of the faithful. Fifty years later, the context is radically different. In Re: Dessauvage, students of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Leuven, together with students in photography from the LUCA School of Arts (campus Sint-Lukas Brussels), investigate the meaning of modern church architecture in a context of fragmented and largely individual faith. Rather than merely historical artifacts, in this project, the buildings by Dessauvage form the raw material for creation and discussion. The exhibition shows the result of this artistic research. Through photographs, drawings, text, models and video a special dialogue between architecture, religion and arts. Vijftig jaar geleden werd in Rome het Tweede Vaticaans Concilie (1962-65) gehouden. De impact hiervan op de kerkarchitectuur kwam in België het meest radicaal tot uiting in het werk van Marc Dessauvage (1931-84). Zijn kerkgebouwen waren opgetrokken uit baksteen, beton en glas, en hadden geen klokkentoren of kruisbeelden aan de buitenkant. In de post-conciliaire geest was het kerkgebouw namelijk geen tempel meer voor een abstracte godheid, maar een huis voor de gelovige gemeenschap. Vijftig jaar later is de context grondig anders. In Re: Dessauvage stellen studenten van de Faculteit Architectuur van de KU Leuven samen met studenten fotografie van de LUCA School of Arts (campus Sint-Lukas Brussel) de vraag naar de betekenis van de moderne kerkarchitectuur in een context van versplinterde, grotendeels individuele geloofsbeleving. De gebouwen van Dessauvage vormen hierbij de grondstof voor creatie en discussie. De tentoonstelling toont het resultaat van dit artistiek onderzoek en brengt via fotografie, tekeningen, tekst, maquettes en video een bijzondere dialoog tot stand tussen architectuur, religie en kunst.status: publishe
