This philologically-based project aims to offer a systematic, comparative study of the views of early Christian Latin authors concerning (a) language functions (i.e. language defined as: a vehicle of communication; a medium of translation; an object invested with structural and typological properties), and (b) language comparison and classification, within their historical, ideological, cultural, religious and theological context. Special attention will be given to authors who have intensively participated in discussions on (i) the problem of translation of ‘sacred’ texts (e.g. Jerome, Rufinus, and Augustine), (ii) the origin and diversification of language (e.g. commentaries on relevant passages in the book of Genesis), and (iii) the natur...
