This paper proposes a combined on-line pulse characterization and discrimination method for micro-EDM milling. It is observed that, during stable machining, a discharge population can be discriminated into a few dominant patterns where there is no overlap among each other in terms of discharge pulse energy. It is also shown that the dominant pulse patterns have dominant contribution to the tool wear, and that tool wear per discharge increases linearly with the increase of the discharge energy.status: publishe
