In this paper the challenges to the reinforcement of the non-proliferation regime are analyzed from three theoretical perspectives: Idealism, Realism, and New Institutionalism. The idealist view that progress on nuclear disarmament is necessary to convince non-nuclear weapon states to support stronger measures against the spread of nuclear weapons is tested. We also examine whether and how state interests and certain decision making procedures can prevent a stronger non-proliferation regime. The results point out that nuclear disarmament can indeed create opportunities for the strengthening of the non-proliferation regime.
