Can cost and quality modelling be useful for the designer?

This study argues that a better understanding of actor’s participation and expectations in the housing process will lead to provide better quality and affordable housing projects. Developed through a “methodological pluralism”, this study identifies actor’s variables and assumptions. A model was developed using a case study involving field work in the city of Guayaquil-Ecuador. The model is designed as a decision tool for actors to help them achieve their expectations regarding quality, affordability and reasonable profits by improving urban and housing design. The study concludes with findings regarding the applicability of the model for optimizing actors participation in the design of a new housing project (optimization of land allocation, streets pattern, plot layouts, mix of housing types, urban rules) translated into more appealing profits for developers and the provision of better and more affordable houses for users.status: publishe
