Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are highly heritable, lifelong, neurological disorders, typically presenting within the first three years of life. Each of these disorders is behaviourally characterized by developmental impairments in social interaction and communication and by a limited range of interests and activities. Despite these theoretically well-defined core symptom categories, the expression of the disorder in individual patients varies greatly.
