Today, photography as art is ubiquitous. The process through which photography since the 1960s gradually entered the oeuvres of artists of the canon and grew into one of the primary artistic media was the theme of numerous exhibitions and publications. However, how this photographic breakthrough happened in Belgium, remained a terra incognita. Therefore, this dissertation addresses the evolution and the potential particularity of the use of photography by Belgian artists from the 1960s until the early 1990s. The period demarcation is based on studies of the artistic canon, which refer to Conceptual art as the beginning of the process in which photography gained acceptance as an autonomous artistic medium.
