The main biological role of metallothionein (MT) is still not fully understood more than fifty years after its discovery. MTs are responsible, first of all, for maintenance of metal homeostasis and detoxification processes. In addition MTs control several intracellular processes, including proliferation, apoptosis and cell differentiation. Only limited study has been done in association with the relationship between MT expression and cell differentiation.
