Next generation sensing devices require significant improvements to satisfy the needs of a wide variety of applications in terms of sensitivity, specificity, cost, compactness, reliability and capacity of real-time measurements. Between the various types of sensors that may offer such characteristics two are of particular interest: sensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and sensors based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs).The first part of this thesis focuses on SPR based sensors.
