The initiation of normal embryo development depends on the completion of all events of egg activation. In all species to date, egg activation requires an increase(s) in the intracellular concentration of calcium ([Ca(2+)](i)), which is almost entirely mediated by inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor 1 (IP(3)R1). In mammalian eggs, fertilization-induced [Ca(2+)](i) responses exhibit a periodic pattern that are called [Ca(2+)](i) oscillations.
