East Coast fever (ECF), an acute lymphoproliferative disease of cattle in sub-Saharan Africa, is caused by the apicomplexan parasite Theileria parva. Protective immunity against the parasite is mediated by CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) directed against schizont-infected cells. The polymorphic immunodominant molecule (PIM) is a ubiquitously expressedschizont surface protein that has been hypothesized to play a role in protective immune responses against T. parva, mostly based on the allelic diversity of its coding sequence.
