Poreuze materialen zijn materialen die bestaan uit een fluïdum dat de op en ruimtes van een elastisch frame vult. De studie van de voortplanting van een geluidsgolf in poreuze materialen verzadigd met een fluïdum is v an belang in een groot aantal applicaties. Geofysici komen bijvoorbeeld tot een meer accurate beschrijving van golfvoortplanting in en boven oce aanbodems, zand, sneeuw en ijslagen wanneer ze rekening houden met het p oreus zijn van het onderzochte materiaal. Toepassingen van golfvoortplan ting in poreuze media bij kleinere golflengtes vinden we bijvoorbeeld oo k terug in huid- en beenderonderzoek.
