Temperament/personality and parenting as risk or resilience factors for child and adolescent psychopathology

Temperament/personality and parenting as risk or resilience factors for child and adolescent psychopathology Karla VAN LEEUWEN 1, Ivan MERVIELDE 2, & Sarah DE PAUW 2 1 K.U.Leuven, Belgium, 2 Ghent University, Belgium Evidence will be presented for the hypothesis that individual differences in children and adolescents can be a risk or resilience factor for psychopathology in the presence of specific parental behavior. Previously, we studied statistical interactions between personality and parenting in the prediction of child internalizing and externalizing problem behavior, in school-aged children and adolescents, in cross-sectional and longitudinal data (Van Leeuwen et al., 2004), and in referred and non-referred samples (Van Leeuwen et al., 2007). More recently, we examined temperament/personality by parenting interactions in young children (aged 3 to 6). In this study a Five Factor measure was included to assess personality in young children, in addition to three more traditional measures of temperament, based on the models of Thomas and Chess, Buss and Plomin, and Rothbart. We will discuss the contribution of these findings to the understanding of the etiology of psychopathology in children and adolescents, as well as some implications for clinical practice.status: publishe
