A comparative analysis of Chinese and international journal-journal relations

The visibility of Chinese journals and the citations of Chinese publications are important for Chinese scientists’ communications with domestic and international counterparts. It works in two ways. On the one hand, articles in journals with high visibility have better chances of being read, therefore bringing more citations. On the other hand, high-quality articles raise the visibility of a journal. Exploring citation patterns as indicators of the domestic and international visibility of Chinese journals helps us to understand the relatively low citation impact of Chinese papers. This study is based on two databases: the China Scientific and Technical Papers and Citations Database (CSTPCD) and the Science Citation Index (SCI). Among the issues we examine are a comparison of average citation patterns of Chinese journals with their international counterparts, and citation patterns of Chinese journals in general science.
