Doctoral training is described here in six steps. First, we give a brief outline of the higher education structure, followed by the legal requirements of postgraduate research training. Third, we describe the situation at the Flemish and French-speaking universities. Fourth, we report on criticisms of graduate students and recent recommendations of an official organisation of universities concerning doctoral training programmes. Fifth, the financing of doctoral studies is described. Finally, we present characteristics of graduate students in Belgium.status: publishe
