Ouders over scholen

ABSTRACT: The central question of the research is whether parents are involved in the school and whether they are willing to participate more in school policy. It is examined in which respect parents differ in their engagement with each other. Three aspects of parental involvement were examined: 1. Involvement in school: do parents reside in participation or school council, are they are active in a parent committee, do they help in the classroom or school activities. 2. Do parents offer assistance at home: do parents support their children at home and do they offer their children a stimulating environment. 3. Contacts between parents and school: these include both formal and informal contacts of parents with the school. In the school year 2001-2002 3495 parents of children in pre-school, primary, special primary and secondary education in 100 schools in Flanders were invited to complete a written questionnaire. 2811 parents participated in the survey, representing a very high response rate of 80%. In addition, a special effort was made to get 147 parents of Turkish and Moroccan origin with children in primary schools involved in the research. De centrale vraag van het onderzoek is of ouders betrokken zijn op de school en of zij bereid zijn om meer te participeren aan het schoolbeleid. Daarbij wordt onderzocht in welk opzicht ouders in hun betrokkenheid van elkaar verschillen. Drie facetten van ouderbetrokkenheid werden onderzocht: 1. Betrokkenheid op school: zetelen ouders in een participatie- of schoolraad, zijn ze actief in een oudercomité, bieden ze hulp in de klas of wonen ze schoolactiviteiten bij. 2. Betrokkenheid thuis: de hulp, controle en ondersteuning die ouders thuis bieden of de mate waarin ouders hun kinderen een stimulerende omgeving bieden. 3. Contacten tussen ouders en school: het betreft zowel formele als informele contacten van de ouders met de school. In het schooljaar 2001-2002 werd aan 3495 ouders met een kind in het kleuter-, lager, buitengewoon lager en secundair onderwijs in 100 scholen in Vlaanderen gevraagd een schriftelijke vragenlijst in te vullen. 2811 ouders werkten mee aan het onderzoek, wat overeenkomt met een bijzonder hoge respons van 80%. Daarnaast werd er een extra inspanning geleverd om 147 ouders van Turkse en Marokkaanse origine met kinderen in het basisonderwijs te betrekken in het onderzoek.
