It is generally held that the Matthean community has deûnitively broken away from Judaism and resolutely turned towards universal mission. Ethnocentric expressions, of distinctly Judeo-christian colour, in the Gospel of Matthew are viewed simply as traditional material or as reminiscences of the historical ministry of Jesus.
