How many we decide upon the grounds which justified the use, in the primitive Church, of the iconographie theme of the charming of animals by Orpheus ? No clear answer may be deduced from the study of the texts of the Fathers which have come down to us. The theme appears to have given rise to a symbolical interpretation in the pagan world. This it doubtless was which led Christians to draw their inspiration from this source. On the other hand, one witnesses a development of the theme in the Church, which brings out the meaning conveyed by the symbol.
