Orphée dans l'iconographie chrétienne

How many we decide upon the grounds which justified the use, in the primitive Church, of the iconographie theme of the charming of animals by Orpheus ? No clear answer may be deduced from the study of the texts of the Fathers which have come down to us. The theme appears to have given rise to a symbolical interpretation in the pagan world. This it doubtless was which led Christians to draw their inspiration from this source. On the other hand, one witnesses a development of the theme in the Church, which brings out the meaning conveyed by the symbol. As a parable of salvation, it may express an ever clearer message of hope : Orpheus is a figure of the divine messenger, while Jesus was to be the very incarnation ; the animals which his discourse changes and saves are the Christians who identify themselves with this image all the more readily as the different animals of the Hellenistic world are often replaced by sheep.Comment déterminer l'interprétation qui a justifié l'utilisation, dans le christianisme ancien, du thème iconographique d'Orphée charmant les animaux ? La lecture des textes patristiques contemporains ne permet pas de dégager une réponse claire. Le thème semble avoir parfois donné lieu à une interprétation symbolique dans le paganisme. C'est sans doute ce qui a amené les chrétiens à s'en inspirer. D'autre part on constate, en milieu chrétien, une évolution du thème qui permet de retrouver la signification dont l'image était chargée. Parabole du salut, elle tend à exprimer un message d'espérance toujours plus précis : Orphée est une figure du messager divin dont Jésus est la réalité même ; les animaux que sa parole transforme et sauve sont les chrétiens qui se reconnaissent d'autant mieux dans cette image que les bêtes variées du modèle hellénistique sont souvent remplacées par les brebis.Prigent Pierre.
