Political Economy and the Opium Poppy in the Golden Triangle. The aim of this article is to show how the growing demand for illicit opium encourages the development of capitalist relations of production in the frontier-mountains of Burma, Laos and Thailand (Triborder Region or Golden Triangle). Due to civil wars in Burma coincident with tribal population growth, land is scarce and shifting cultivation must be replaced by other, more suitable agricultural techniques.
