Morpho sulkowskyi Kollar, 1850, was discovered in Venezuela... 40 years ago (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Morphinae). Morpho sulkowskyi lives in Andean cloud forests. It exists from northern Peru to the three Colombian Cordilleras, without significant morphological variations. Two males were collected, in 1970, in the Venezuelan Cordillera de Mérida. The history of this discovery, which remained unknown, is explained. The two specimens are very close to Colombian specimens : obviously, the species is weakly variable throughout the Northern Andes. On the contrary, in the Central Andes (Bolivia, Peru), M. sulkowskyi is represented by diversified taxa. The evolution of these butterflies is discussed in the light of the history of Andes uplift.Mor...
