Dunhuang before the manuscripts. Conservation, diffusion and appropriation of learning in medieval China. Thanks to the manuscripts discovered in Cave 17 of the Mogao Grottoes, Dunhuang is known first of all as a major crossroads in the circulation of ideas and merchandise along the Silk Road during the Tang and Five Dynasties. But well before the period of great influence documented by these manuscripts, Dunhuang and the entire Hexi Corridor had already played a role of critical importance as a refuge for scholarly culture -while eastern China was in decline -and as a place of welcome for Buddhism coming from the West.
