La Chine vue de l’Amérique espagnole à la fin du XVIe siècle

China as seen from Spanish America at the end of the 16th century. The Natural and Moral History of the Indies of Father Joseph de Acosta (1589), the first comprehensive work dedicated to the New World, dates from a period when trans-Pacific relations were well established and when the Philippines formed a staging point between China and Spanish America. It is therefore not surprising that this book contains a certain amount of information relative to China. One discovers, on the one hand, details on maritime routes and the beginnings of the trade in precious metals and, on the other, parallels drawn between the development of Amerindian empires and the evolution of Chinese institutions. Starting from the observation that, just like Chinese writing, the systems of notation in use in pre-Columbian America are not phonetic scripts capable of representing the sounds of language but rather originate from the representation of objects, he concludes that Chinese civilization must have developed in isolation, without contact with the peoples of the Mediterranean or the Near East. Chinese writing constituted, in his eyes, an obstacle to intellectual and scientific exchange.L’Histoire naturelle et morale des Indes Occidentales du P. José de Acosta (1589), premier ouvrage de synthèse consacré au Nouveau Monde, date d’une époque où les relations trans-pacifiques étaient bien établies et où les Philippines constituaient un relais entre la Chine et l’Amérique hispanique. Il n’est donc pas surprenant que ce livre renferme un certain nombre d’informations relatives à la Chine. On y relève d’une part des précisions sur les voies maritimes et les débuts du commerce des métaux précieux et, de l’autre, un parallèle entre la formation des royaumes amérindiens et l’évolution des institutions chinoises. Partant de la constatation que, tout comme l’écriture chinoise, les systèmes de notations en usage dans l’Amérique précolombienne ne sont pas des écritures phonétiques capables de représenter le langage mais des procédés de représentation des choses, il en conclut que la civilisation chinoise se serait développée de manière autonome, sans contact avec les peuples de la Méditerranée et du Proche Orient.
