Florence Hu-Sterk : "Palace Lamentations Poems" of the Tang. The Reclu¬ sive Life of Court Women. The literary theme of the solitary palace lady is of ancient origin, but it is only under the Tang that it achieved unprecedented success. On the basis of a number of representative "Palace Lamentations Poems", this article propo¬ ses to retrace the tragic destiny of these women : their introduction into the palace, seclusion, and final departure. Beyond the details of their lives and daily activities which abound in this kind of verse, the reccurence of the themes and images offers a lively picture of their hermetically closed universe.
