North China Rural Families. Changes during the Communist Era

This paper describes and analyses the Chinese family in Yangmansa, a north China village, with respect to changes and continuities from before the onset of Communist rule through to the time of fieldwork in 1986-1987. After the Communist victory there was a rapid transition from arranged blind marriage to the requirement that the couple first approve of their match, but overwhelmingly marriages continued to be arranged throughout the collective era and since decollectivization in 1982. During the collective era there was a major transformation in marriage from dowry to brideprice, and then a return to dowry with decollectivization. The traditional corporate family or jia survived in weakened form during the collective era, when workpoints replaced land as the major family asset, and when there took hold a new pattern of danguo or economic and residential independence prior to formal family division or fenjia. With decollectivization, family arrangements remained as before, except in a few cases where integrated joint families have once again appeared, based upon the diversification now possible in the era of economic reform.Familles rurales du Nord de la Chine. Cet article décrit et analyse les continuités et les changements apparus dans la famille à Yangmansa, un village au nord de la Chine, pour la période débutant avant même l'instauration du régime communiste jusqu'au moment de la recherche sur le terrain de l'auteur en 1986-1987. Après la victoire communiste, les mariages arrangés «aveugle » ont rapidement disparu suite à l'exigence faite par le nouveau gouvernement que le jeune couple approuve d'abord son mariage. Pourtant, tout au long de la période collectiviste et même après la décollectivisation, la plupart des mariages sont restés arrangés. Durant l'ère collectiviste, la transformation majeure au sujet du mariage fut la transition d'un système de dot à un système de prix pour la fiancée ; avec la fin des collectives, le système de la dot a réapparu. La famille corporative traditionnelle, jia, a survécu sous une forme atténuée pendant la période collectiviste, quand les points de travail ont remplacé la terre comme bien principal de la famille et tandis qu'apparaissait la nouvelle tendance à l'indépendance économique et résidentielle (danguo) des jeunes couples avant même la division formelle de la famille (fenjia ). Depuis la décollectivisation, les arrangements familiaux sont restés identiques. Notons, cependant, la réapparition dans quelques cas de la famille jointe intégrée, un arrangement fondé sur la diversification économique de la famille rendue à nouveau possible par les réformes.Cohen Myron L.
