O insucesso escolar nos grupos étnico-culturais. Análise de duas escolas multiculturais no distrito de Setúbal.

Instituto Superior de Economia e GestãoThe present investigation was made in the area of the school unsuccess in the ethnical and cultural groups, concentrated in the study of two basic teaching schools (one of the 1st degree and another of the 2nd and 3rd degrees) in the lectivo year of 1995/96, both belonging to the district of Setúbal. These schools are characterised by being multi-coloured, by being placed in a degraded zone (where a great number of African families live) and by having problems of school unsuccess, mainly among the pupils of the ethnical and cultural minorities. In this context, we discussed what role the school and the social agents should perform, in order to reduce the school unsuccess of these pupils. Through a specific methodology of studying the case, we made the analysis of the school reality, by direct observation, document analysis, statistic data and inquests involving teachers and pupils. We tried to characterise ali the pupils at several leveis: social, economical, cultural, school history and future prospects. In order to find the reasons why the school history of the ethnical and cultural minorities shows to be more "accidental" then the lusitanian pupils belonging to same social class. We come to the conclusion that among the factors that seem to contributo to the school insucess we find the cultural difference underlined both by the aloofness of some of the social agents to the culture which such pupils are bearer and the the indifference of school towards their deficiencies conceming the portuguese ianguage, not paying attention to the fact that for more than 1/4 of these pupils this is not the Ianguage in wich they communicate with their family. These factors are many times connected with the incipient formation in Multi-coloured Education of the most of the teachers, and to the fact of the curricular programs being unsuitable to this specific school population. In summary, the increase of the school success of the pupils coming from ill-favoured social and economic groups and belonging to minority cultural groups needs necessarily the change of the traditional school, meaning the humanisation and the diversification of the teaching, in order to create a real adaptability of the school to the real conditions. The resolution of this problem is not only a responsibility of the school for these pupils are submitted to exclusion by motives of Multi-dimensional character; so, it is necessary that the social agents involved conjugate efforts in order to keep these pupils from the ways of social exclusion.A presente investigação enquadrou-se na área do Insucesso Escolar nos grupos étnico- -culturais. tendo-se centrado no estudo de duas escolas do ensino básico (uma do 1o ciclo e outra do 2o e 3o ciclos) no ano lectivo de 1995/96, ambas pertencentes ao distrito de Setúbal. Estas escolas caracterizam-se por serem multiculturais, por se localizarem numa zona degradada (onde reside um grande número de famílias de etnia africana) e por possuírem problemas de insucesso escolar, sobretudo, entre os alunos das minorias étnico-culturais Neste contexto, discutiu-se qual o papel que a escola e os seus actores sociais deverão protagonizar, de modo a reduzir o insucesso escolar destes alunos. Através de uma metodologia especifica de estudo de caso, procedeu-se à análise da realidade escolar, por observação directa, análise documental, dados estatísticos e questionários envolvendo professores e alunos. Tentou-se caracterizar todos os alunos a vários níveis: familiar, social, económico, cultural, percurso escolar e expectativas relativamente ao futuro. De modo a averiguar as razões pelas quais o percurso escolar das minorias étnico-culturais se revelava mais "acidentado", do que o dos alunos lusos pertencentes à mesma classe social. Concluíu-se que entre os factores, que parecem contribuir para o insucesso escolar das minorias, se encontra a diferença cultural, sublinhada quer pelo alheamento por parte de alguns actores sociais, da cultura de que tais alunos são portadores, quer pela indiferença da escola perante as suas deficiências ao nível da língua portuguesa, não atendendo ao facto de para mais de 1/4 destes alunos esta não ser a sua língua de comunicação na família. Factores que se aliam muitas vezes, à incipiente formação em Educação Multicultural da maioria dos professores, e à inadequação dos programas curriculares à população escolar em causa. Em suma, o aumento do sucesso escolar dos alunos provenientes de meios socioeconómicos desfavorecidos e pertencentes a grupos culturais minoritários, passa necessáriamente pela alteração da escola tradicional, isto é, pela humanização e diversificação do ensino, de modo a que haja uma efectiva adaptabilidade da escola às condições reais. A resolução deste problema, não compete apenas à escola, pois estes alunos estão sujeitos a exclusão por motivos de carácter multidimensional, logo será necessário que os actores sociais envolvidos conjuguem esforços, por forma a desviarem-nos dos caminhos da exclusão social.N/
