The demography of European Upper Palaeolithic artists an approach through the hand stencils

RESUMEN: El presente trabajo de Fin de Máster tiene como objetivo llevar a cabo una primera aproximación a la paleodemografia de los artistas de Paleolítico a través de un elemento que ejerce una relación directa entre éstos y su arte: la mano. De esta manera, será posible caracterizar aspectos demográficos básicos de los artistas que pintaron estas cuevas durante la Prehistoria. El estudio se centra en el continente europeo, donde la cronología que envuelve estas representaciones es la del periodo Gravetiense. Estos motivos solamente se han localizado, por el momento, en España, Francia e Italia, y por ello, nuestra investigación se centrará en las cavidades localizadas en estos tres países (además de la cueva gibraltareña de Gorham’s, en territorio británico). Para ello se recurrirá por un lado a la recogida y estudio de una muestra actual de manos para su caracterización biométrica, y, por otro al análisis y medición del registro arqueológico a partir de los modelos fotogramétricos disponibles. Se ha realizado una selección de cuevas cuyas manos representadas en su interior posibilitasen la medición con mayor exactitud en función de su estado de conservación y de su formato, eligiéndose finalmente las cuevas de: Fuente del Trucho (Aragón); Maltravieso (Extremadura); La Garma (Cantabria); Castillo (Cantabria) y Fuente del Salín (Cantabria). El estudio morfométrico de esas representaciones de manos y su comparación estadística con una muestra actual nos ha permitido estimar la edad y el género de las huellas pictóricas de manos representadas en las cuevas por los artistas del Paleolítico Superior. De esta manera, podremos adentrarnos en los aspectos más sociales de los artistas paleolíticos como su accesibilidad al arte por tramos de edad y/o género, es decir, la posible división social en el acceso y producción gráfica simbólica. Esta primera aproximación puede tener su continuidad ampliando la cantidad de cuevas arqueológicas a estudio y el programa experimental de comparación, de manera que se pueda obtener conclusiones más generales y otras específicas a escala temporal o y/o espacial.ABSTRACT: The aim of the present research is to make a first approximation to the paleodemography of paleolithic artists through an element that exerts a direct relationship between them and their art: their hands. By analysing such element, it will be possible to characterize the basic demographic aspects regarding the artists who decorated these caves thousands of years ago. The study focuses on the European continent, where the chronology surrounding these representations is the Gravetian period. These images have only been located, for the moment, in Spain, France and Italy, and therefore, our research will focus on caves located in these three countries (in addition to Gorham's cave, in the British territory). This will be done on the one hand by collecting and studying a current sample of hands, and on the other, by analysing and measuring the archaeological record using the available photogrammetries. A selection of caves and hands has been made, making it possible to measure them more accurately according to their state of conservation and their complete format, finally choosing the caves of Fuente del Trucho (Aragón), Maltravieso (Extremadura), La Garma (Cantabria), Castillo (Cantabria) and Fuente del Salín (Cantabria).A total of 236 hands from five different caves have been included in the present research, 67 of them have been partially measured and 28 entirely. The morphometric study of these hands and their statistical comparison with a current sample has allowed us to differentiate the age and sex of the handprints represented in the caves by the artists of the Upper Palaeolithic. In this way, we will be able to delve into the more social aspects of Palaeolithic artists, such as their accessibility to art by age and gender, that is, the possible social division in symbolic activity. This first approach can be continued by increasing the number of archaeological caves to be studied and the experimental comparison programme, so that more general and other specific conclusions can be obtained at a temporal or spatial scale.Máster en Prehistoria y Arqueologí
