The problem of model-based fault diagnosis in complex systems has received an increasing interest over the past decades. Experience has proved that it needs to be taken into account during the system design stage, by means of diagnosability analysis. Diagnosability is the ability of a system to exhibit different symptoms for a set of anticipated fault situations. Several approaches for diagnosability have been developed using different modelling formalisms., yet the reasoning for diagnosability analysis is very similar in all these approaches.
