Abstract: In order to improve the environmental impact of concrete, there is a global trend to replace Portland cement by mineral admixtures. In addition to the reduction in the environmental impact of the material, the incorporation of supplementary cementitious materials in concrete will densify the cementitious matrix and consequently improve its impermeability, a property associated with the durability and the service life of concrete. However, in most cases, the performance of a cementitious material is typically evaluated through the impact on the mechanical properties and the cost, leaving aside the durability and the effects at the microstructural level.
