As described by Steckel et al. [2003 and 2004] it is possible to produce pure chitosan pellets with excellent morphological and mechanical properties without using any further additives. The chitosan which was used in those studies had a degree of deacetylation over 95% and could be handled without any problem. However, subsequent batches of the same specified quality showed a inadequate plasticity for the extrusion process. Minor differences in the degree of deacetylation were expected to cause these process differences.
