Mast cells (MCs) play an important role in acute inflammatory and allergic immune reactions. The activation of MCs via antigen-mediated triggering of the high-affinity IgE receptor FceRI causes immediate degranulation and release of preformed mediators from secretory granules, as well as de novo synthesis of lipid mediators and cytokines. The regulation of this complex process is crucial for the maintenance of a balanced immune system.
