A pilot-scale submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) with anoxic and oxic tanks was operated in an attempt to reduce the problems concerning effective removal of organic matter and nutrients from municipal wastewater. A flat type membrane with a pore size of 0.038 mu m and having a total surface area of 3.60 m(2) was used in the experiments. During the operation, MLSS concentration in aeration (oxic) tank of SMBR was maintained at about 5-7 g/l. Influent and effluent pH in the SMBR also changed between 7.3-8.4.
