Susceptibility of some economically important olive cultivars and clones to Verticilllium dahliae Kleb in Turkey

5th International Symposium on Olive Growing -- SEP 27-OCT 02, 2004 -- Izmir, TURKEYWOS: 000257694400086Besides the other olive growing countries, Verticillium wilt caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb is also one of the most important diseases of the olive in Turkey. The control of this disease is mainly based on preventive measures. For this reason, selection of resistant cultivars is of great importance in controlling the disease. In this study, the susceptibilities to Verticillium dahliae have been determined in Ayvahk, Gemlik, Domat, Memecik and Uslu, economically important domestic cultivars of Turkey and in Manzanilla, Spain originated cultivar. The one-year old saplings were inoculated by wounding on the opposite sides of their stems with a highly virulent Verticillium isolate (VCG1). The plants were maintained for 2 months under controlled conditions and later they were transferred outside and kept under natural conditions until completing for duration of a year. Similar applications were realized for 5 clones of Ayvahk and 7 clones of Gemlik. Besides, development of the disease has been determined by grafting susceptible cultivars on Gemlik cultivar. Development of the disease was evaluated according to a scale, which consists of points ranging between 0-4 at certain intervals (Tjamos et al., 1991). The severity of the disease has varied between 35.40% and 100% in the tested cultivars.
