Three alkaloids have been isolated purely from Galanthus plicatus ssp. byzantinus (Amaryllidaceae). The chemical structures of these alkaloids have been identified by using modern spectroscopic methods such as UV, IR, MS, 1D- and 2D-NMR (1H, 1H DQF COSY, HSQC, HMBC) and X-ray crystallography. One of the identified alkaloids is ismine from the phenanthridine subgroup; the other two, 3-epimacronine and tazettine, belong to the tazettine subgroup. This is the first report of the occurrence of ismine and 3-epimacronine in the genus Galanthus
