Intersphincteric rectum resection for low rectal tumors: Report of five cases [Aşagi yerl?imli rektum tümörlerinde intersfinkterik rektum rezeksiyonu: Beş olgunun sunumu]

Purpose: lntersphincteric resection is an alternative treatment method to abdominoperineal resection for low rectal cancer. The aim of this study is to review our limited experience about intersphincteric resection. Material and Methods: The medical records of five patients treated for low rectal tumors by intersphincteric resection and coloanai anastomosis in our clinic between December 2006 and March 2009 were retrospectively reviewed. Three of the five patients were female.The mean age of the patients was 67.2 years (45-72). Ail patients were treated with intersphincteric resection, coloanal anastomosis and diverting colostomy. Colostomy closure was performed in three patients. There were no mortalities or morbidities except temporary faecal incontinence. Defecatory function, which was evaluated by the number of bowel movements in a day and continence scores were at an acceptable ratio after three months from the operation. Conclusion: With strictly marked rules, intersphincteric resection may be an eligible choice for sphincter-preserving surgery in low rectal cancer
