PubMed ID: 16546388Intervertebral disk (IVD) degeneration, a complex pathological condition of varying origins, causes low back pain. Degenerative changes in IVD tissue affect the adjacent vertebral structure, resulting in a decreased vertebral trabecular width. It has been suggested that transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-ß1) may have a role in the repair of connective tissue, as it occurs in the IVD degeneration process.
