Experimental and epidemiologic studies have shown that oxygen-free radicals are elevated because antioxidant enzyme activities are altered both in uncontrolled essential hypertension and DM itself. Recently paraoxonase (PON) has been recognized as an antioxidant enzyme that hydrolyzes lipid peroxides.
