Postpartum hemorrhage, which is observed in one birth out of 1000 in developing countries, and in one birth out of 100.000 in developed countries world wide, is one of the most important causes of maternal mortality. Although there is no universal definition for postpartum hemorrhage, it can be defined in various forms such as; hemorrhage which causes more than % 10 decrease in hematocrit, hemorrhage which requires transfusion or hemorrhage which causes hemodynamic instability. Hemorrhage over average values or active bleeding require sending to a higher level health institution. An appropriate management of the third phase affects complication incidence and the amount of blood lost. The care of a woman having postpartum hemorrhage depends on assessing the reason fast and carefully and stopping the bleeding immediately. The first thing to do is to gather the appropriate crew and equipment to intervent. Vital findings of the patient should be assessed, venous access should be provided, blood samples should be taken from the patient and should be sent to labrotary for hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet and coagulation tests, for determining blood type and Rh. Foley catheter should be attached to control urine outcome. The amount of blood lost should be determined and etiology should be found. Traditional management of postpartum hemorrhage includes uterotonics, internal iliac arter embolization or ligation, and finally histerectomy. Recently, alternative surgical interference for histerectomy, compression to uterus sutures have been applied.
