PubMed ID: 16615017Smoking causes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in 15 to 20% of smokers. Smoking accelerates the annual rate of FEV, decline, whereas it was demonstrated that smoking cessation is the major factor that reduces this decline. The aims of this prospective study were to assess the success rate and factors affecting smoking cessation, besides, to eualuate the effect of cessation on annual FEV1 decline. Sixty-five consecutive patients with COPD and as a control group 50 age-and sex-matched healthy smokers who were admitted to our smoking cessation clinic were enrolled in the study.
