The economic analysis of organic greenhouse tomato production: A case study for Turkey

Conventional greenhouse production of tomato can involve the use of materials that may cause problems with disposal. Recently, importance is given to greenhouse tomato production. Organic production of tomatoes can provide an alternative, but tittle is known about the economics of this type of enterprise. The primary purpose of this study is to develop a budget for organic greenhouse tomato. The budget identifies specific cost categories and estimates a net return for production of organic greenhouse tomatoes. Growers can utilize the budget to develop their own cost and return estimate. According to the results of this study, net return was determined to be EUR 1.4/m2 and EUR 0.2/kg for organic greenhouse tomatoes. It was also determined that production and market risks both affect profitability and economic viability of organic grown vegetables
