The topic of this Thesis is related to the determination of second-order nonlinear optical properties by optical second-harmonic generation. Important advances are achieved with regard to two different aspects. First, the reliability of the traditional second-harmonic technique used to characterize nonlinear properties of surfaces and thin films is carefully analyzed and then improved. Second, a new technique based on the use of two beams at the fundamental frequency is used to address the origin of the second-order response of isotropic and centrosymmetric materials.
