The piston in an internal combustion engine has a demanding job. While sliding inside the cylinder it has to seal the combustion chamber and transmit high pressure force to the crankshaft. Same time the piston is exposed to great thermal load. The piston is in touch with hot combustion gases so it must be cooled using lubricating oil to prevent piston from overheating. Too high piston temperature causes a seizure between cylinder liner and piston. Dimensioning a piston is a challenging task where static loading, fatigue, and thermal stresses have to be taken into account.
