Moral education in textbooks from the first years of republic to present [Cumhuriyet’in ilk yıllarından günümüze ders kitaplarında ahlak eğitimi]

The notion of leading individual to want the better or desirable one is one of the purposes of education and moral education in general and private manners, respectively. In the direction of this purpose, it could be said that moral education is provided first of all in family and school, and then in all kinds of places to some extent where socialization materializes itself in order to raise good and moral individuals. Rightful political consciousness is transferred to new generations as re-producing societal order in schools with education that is one of the tools to socialize an individual; furthermore textbooks are particularly used to achieve this purpose. Although desire to create “good”, “virtuous” and “moral” individual as moral feelings and values correspondents, by using textbooks that is one of the indispensable tools of education is general purpose of many lessons, it is the private purpose of moral education. In this context, the majority of the studies that is conducted under moral education in Turkey actually depends on “Religious Culture and Moral Education” textbooks. However, it is insufficient to analyze “DKAB” and “Moral” textbook, which has been written in 1975, in order to analyze the past and current situation of moral education in Turkey, comprehensively. Besides these textbooks, moral subject should be analyzed in textbooks of “Civics” that is indirectly associated with moral education. The purpose of this study is to have a role on understanding the historical development of raising moral citizens process in directions of notably textbooks, teaching programs and regulations, and currently employed efforts to raise today’s moral citizens. © 2017, Hacettepe University.
