Aivokasvaimet ovat lisääntyvästä lääketieteellisestä tiedosta ja tekniikasta huolimatta vaikeasti hoidettava kasvainryhmä. Eritoten pahanlaatuiset glioomat ovat haastavia hoitaville lääkäreille ja tutkijoille. Vaikka syöpähoidot ovat kehittyneet monien muiden kiinteiden kasvainten osalta viime vuosikymmenien aikana merkittävästi, ovat glioomat yhä yksi huonoennusteisimmistä kasvaintyypeistä.
