Tuzluluk ve kuraklık dünyada bitki verimliliğini azaltan önemli çevresel stres faktörleridir. Bu nedenle, özellikle tarımsal açıdan önemli olan bitkilerin stres koşullarına karşı oluşturdukları mekanizmaların anlaşılması üretkenliği artırmak için oldukça önemlidir. Fakat, çoklu abiyotik stres koşullarına karşı bitkilerin oluşturdukları savunma mekanizmaları ve ᵞ-aminobutirik asit (GABA) metabolizması arasındaki ilişki henüz tam olarak bilinmemektedir.
