The flow around a surface mounted and semi-buried elliptical cylinder is investigated numerically in a steady current. To determine the length of upstream and downstream separation regions, the governing equations solved by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package, ANSYS, which is based on finite element method. The numerical simulations are carried out using k-epsilon and k-omega turbulence models for different mesh systems. The best mesh system and better turbulence model for flow around a surface mounted circular cylinder are selected by comparing with studies in literature.
