: Des Lumières allemandes à l'Ecole de Francfort

International audienceThe book aims to connect and confront contemporary German philosophical debates with those of the end of the Enlightenment on the question of identities and religious and political integration. The aim is to revisit the debates on the notions of tolerance and recognition based on their modern understanding by the actual Frankfurt School (in particular Axel Honneth and Rainer Forst). The theoretical challenge of the book is to answer the question of the continuity between tolerance of the Enlightenment and recognition of contemporary social and political philosophy in Germany.1. The Limits of toleranceFrom an analysis of the criticism of passive tolerance found both among the philosophers of the German Enlightenment and among the thinkers of the Frankfurt School, the first chapter of the book aims to identify the correlations between both centuries and to establish problematic links between the thoughts of the Enlightenment and contemporary reflections on the notions of tolerance and recognition. It examines the structural factors that justify the connection between these two key periods in the history of German ideas, based on Germany's confrontation with its self-understanding and its unity.2. Minorities and minority: Emancipation and recognition of equal rightsBased on the issue of the integration of cultural and religious minorities into German society in the 18th century, the second chapter is devoted to an examination of the link between the emancipation of minorities and the emancipation of the citizens in the the Enlightenment period. This analysis forms the basis for a third German way of interpreting the liberal division between public sphere and private sphere of life, which will be reinvested by Frankfurt thinkers, in particular Jürgen Habermas, at the end of the 20th century.3. New ways for the recognition in Germany Habermas’ dynamic conception of individual autonomy opens up new perspectives in the specific post-metaphysical and post-national context of contemporary societies. The last chapter of the book provides an overview of the German philosophies of recognition and justice among Habermas' successors. From the Habermasian theory of deliberation, two lines of reflection developed in the 2000s in Germany, represented on the one hand by Rainer Forst and his reflection on justification from a (post-)Kantian critical perspective and on the other by Axel Honneth and his theory of recognition, breaking more radically with the achievements of the Aufklärung.L’ouvrage cherche à mettre en rapport et à confronter les débats philosophiques allemands contemporains avec ceux de la fin du siècle des Lumières sur la question des identités et de l’intégration religieuse et politique. Il s’agit de revisiter les débats autour des notions de tolérance et de reconnaissance à partir de leur saisie moderne par les continuateurs de l’Ecole de Francfort (notamment Axel Honneth et Rainer Forst). L’enjeu théorique du livre est de répondre à la question de la continuité entre tolérance des Lumières et reconnaissance de la philosophie sociale et politique contemporaine en Allemagne.1. Les limites de la toléranceLe premier chapitre de l’ouvrage vise à identifier, à partir de la critique de la tolérance passive que l’on retrouve à la fois chez les philosophes des Lumières allemandes et chez les penseurs de l’Ecole de Francfort, les lignes de force qui traversent l’un comme l’autre siècle et à tisser des liens problématiques entre les pensées des Lumières et les pensées contemporaines sur les notions de tolérance et de reconnaissance. Il analyse les facteurs structurels qui justifient le rapprochement entre ces deux périodes clé de l’histoire des idées allemandes, notamment la confrontation de l’Allemagne à l’image qu’elle a d’elle-même et de son unité.2. Minorités et minorité : Emancipation et reconnaissance de droits égauxA partir de la problématique de l’intégration des minorités culturelles et religieuses dans la société allemande du XVIIIe siècle, le deuxième chapitre entend livrer une analyse du lien entre émancipation des minorités et émancipation du citoyen pour les philosophes des Lumières. Cette analyse constitue la base d’une troisième voie allemande dans l’interprétation de la scission libérale entre sphère de vie publique et privée, qui sera réinvestie par les penseurs de Francfort, en particulier Jürgen Habermas, à la fin du XXe siècle.3. Nouvelles voies de la reconnaissance en AllemagneLa dynamique introduite dans la conception de l’autonomie individuelle par cette réinterprétation du libéralisme politique chez Habermas ouvre de nouvelles voies de réflexion dans le contexte postmétaphysique et postnational qui est celui, spécifique, des sociétés contemporaines. Le dernier chapitre de l’ouvrage offre un état des lieux des philosophies allemandesde la reconnaissance et de la justice chez les continuateurs de Habermas. A partir de la théorie habermassienne de la délibération, deux branches de la réflexion se développent dans les années 2000 en Allemagne, représentées d’un côté par Rainer Forst et sa réflexion sur la justification dans une optique critique (post)kantienne et de l’autre par Axel Honneth et sa théorie de la reconnaissance, rompant de manière plus radicale avec les acquis, anthropologiques notamment, de l’Aufklärung
